new face, myself

I finally got the time to tweak my Tabulas. Hey, don't credit me for the masthead. It's done by the masterful WWGN, one of our artists here. (He originally made a really nice site design, only I am not too good in xhtml. Too bad. Hope he can forgive me for not doing justice to his craft.)

So here I am, blogging from my first honest blog ever. Tortured Squid is now officially open. I dropped the plan to play confused/dazed madwoman and decided on becoming nice and corporate--(til I get bored doing it). I won't write fiction anymore. I'll tell only good things. Promise I won't make you sad.

Severed head on your bed

Everyone wants to take a piece of the fun. Admittedly, I have got my share of April Fool's Day treats. Fake roaches in restaurants, toy computer mouses in the office, scary memos from bosses. Everyone wants to be called clever and start the scare. But it's not funny when it's recycled. How about something new for a change? Like a severed head on your bed to greet your morning? Don't want the messy part? Try this one.

from my inbox

The Chicago Manual of Style website has just been updated with answers to the following new questions:

Q. If someone has a PhD and is a professor at a university, what would be his or her title? Doctor or Professor?

This used to be pretty amusing, back in those days when I was doing editing for a publishing company. But now: What the heck!

There're three lines on the note you sent that struck me. Funny, it reminded me of something someone else had told me months before. I don't recall you ever being soft and mushy like that, but I appreciate it.

28-hour day

This seems like an interesting concept.

There's no difference in the number of hours per week. However, under the new system, a week would now be 28/6 instead of 24/7.

This means you could do in a day all the things that you want to do...but with more time. Now you can sleep longer, work longer, party longer. Nice!

Snooping via keyboard sounds

Scientists at Berkeley research took 10-minute audio recordings of people typing at their keyboards and fed the recordings into a computer that used an algorithm to detect subtle differences in the sound as each letter is struck. They came up with a spying tool that translates random noises in the keyboard, with up to 96% accuracy.

"We didn't need high-quality audio to accomplish this," said Feng Zhou, a Berkley graduate student and study author. "We just used a $10 microphone that can be easily purchased in almost any computer supply store."
